Double chamber would be a typical muffler that is designd for best noise supression. The exhaust pipe comes in from the engine or catalytic convertor and then it passes through a few baffles and then exits the tail pipe, often through an internal pipe that is full of holes or perforations. Single chamber is less restrictive and allows faster expulsion of exhaust gasses. The pipe comes in and the exhaust gases jump from the incoming pipe to the outgoing pipe without running through any baffles. Most of the pipes or tubes inside the mufflers are perforated and the exhaust gases have to exit through these holes and then re-enter other holes to exit.
