Alun Thorne reports. Some people propose to their wives there, for some it is the ideal venue to have their ashes scattered and many would set up home there if they could. Shrewsbury Town played for almost years at its famous Gay Meadow ground on the banks of the River Severn before moving to a new state-of-the-art stadium on the outskirts of the town in The ground — the scene of numerous famous matches including in when the minnows beat Premiership Everton in the FA Cup with a brace from Nigel Jemson — was demolished soon after the club moved out but the subsequent recession slowed down any redevelopment plans. However, work is now progressing on a new housing scheme on the site of the old ground and Daniel Millar, from Cooper Green, which has been appointed as agents on the development, said the scheme is befitting of a site that is held in such high esteem.
Shrewsbury Town — Chester City; 25 november League Two 4 , toeschouwers; 4. Wat een heerlijk gevoel is dat toch, opstaan in de stad waar de wedstrijd gespeeld gaat worden, geen lange reis vooraf maar net als de locals tien minuten rijden naar het stadion. Work starts at the old Gay Meadow football ground site
When the last football match was played at the Gay Meadow in Shrewsbury, the stadium was demolished and plans to redevelop the site for housing were finalised. That was more than two years ago and since then the old ground has remained empty with no sign of any residential development going ahead apart from some earthworks. Amanda Jones and Brian Rennie, who live in the Blackfriars flats overlooking the former football ground, say the mound of soil covered with black plastic in the middle of the land, is an eyesore and they want the developers to get on with the job.
