I'd never been inside The Eagle bar before, although I had always been attracted to the type of guy I saw entering and leaving there. I guess I was too intimidated by their size - I'd usually gone to bars with one primary rule in mind: Don't pick up anyone stronger than yourself. It might have been paranoia, but I always feared getting some stranger home with me and having him beat me up and rob me.
I was lazing round the house when he turned up. It was a humid day, not uncomfortable but warm enough for me to be wearing just a baggy t-shirt and a pair of jeans cut off at the knees. When the doorbell rang I'd just finished getting something to eat and I was standing in the toilet taking a piss. There was frosted glass around the front door, so all I could make out was a black blob leaning against the porch. I flushed the toilet, swept my hair back in the mirror and jogged towards the front door.
